Fire Prevention Bureau

The Hillside Fire Prevention Bureau conducts National Fire Prevention Week programs during October of each year. This year's theme is "Practice Your Escape Plan". To escape a fire in your home, residents need to make sure that everyone in the home has practiced the plan.

The Hillside Fire Department annually provides Fire Prevention demonstrations to our local public and private elementary schools all month long. We try to demonstrate to the children how to be safe at home and explain how quickly accidents can happen.

We emphasize never playing with matches and never hiding if there is a fire in their home. We also stress practicing an escape plan and having a designated family meeting place outside of the home. Firefighters show how to "stop, drop, and roll" and how to stay low. We also talk about cooking safety and making sure the batteries in smoke detectors are changed when we change our clocks. Finally, firefighters demonstrate what a firefighter looks like in full turn-out gear, so not to be afraid of firefighters during an emergency.

The Hillside Fire Prevention Bureau, in cooperation with the NJ Division of Fire Safety provides free smoke detectors to citizens who cannot afford or who cannot install smoke detectors themselves. We also provide a free home fire safety audit of homes, upon request.
