The Hillside Fire Department provides professional Firefighting, Rescue
and Emergency Medical Services to the Community.
VISION STATEMENT
The Hillside Fire Department continues to provide professional services
through modern training, rapid response and enlightened leadership. We
shall respond to the needs of the community in a professional, compassionate
manner actively participating within the social structure to initiate direction
and support.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
The Hillside Fire Department was established in 1913. Originally a
volunteer organization, the department evolved into a career operation in 1927.
Hillside is located in Northern New Jersey surrounded by Newark,
Elizabeth, Union and Irvington. The Township is 2.7 sq. miles in size with a
population of almost 22,000. Hillside maintains a large industrial area which
occupies approximately 1.5 sq. miles within the Townships limits. Three routes of
traffic, Interstate 78, Route 22 and The Garden State Parkway as well as
the northeast rail corridor intersect within the Township.
The Fire Department staffs two firestations with a compliment of 48
officers and men. These firefighters respond with 1 Engine Company, 1 Quint
Company, 1 Fire Ambulance and a Command Vehicle. The department provideds 24 hour EMS
transport services at the BLS level. All members of the department are
N.J. State certified EMTs. In addition, a fully staffed Fire Prevention Bureau
ensures all National and State codes are complied with. The department
responds annually to aproximately 3,300 calls, this volume of responses
requires a well-trained, dedicated emergency service. The members are kept
abreast of all laws, NFPA & OSHA requirements and any Firefighting tenets
through the Training Division. The Hillside Fire Department has provided
and will continue to provide superior service to the community we are sworn to
protect.
